Where and When are US Powerball Draws Held

There are three US Powerball draws each and every week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays in the USA. This equates to Tuesdays, Thursday and Sunday in Australia. Each draw takes place in Tallahassee, Florida.

The official cut-off time for ticket sales is 1 hour before each draw at 10:00pm (USA Eastern Time), however the cut-off time does vary by jurisdiction. In some US jurisdictions the cut-off time is 2 hours before the draw, at 9:00pm (USA Eastern Time).

Once draws have been closed, no further tickets can be purchased for the draw, and all ticket sales are suspended until the draw has been conducted and finalised.

Each of the three weekly draws are conducted at 10:59pm (USA Eastern Time).

Once a draw has taken place, ticket sales for the following draw usually commence at 11:16pm (USA Eastern Time).

Draw results are usually available within an hour of the draw having taken place. Powerball results for each draw will be published on this website as soon as they are available.

Where and When are Australian Draws Held

The Australian version of Powerball is drawn only once each week, on Thursday nights in Australia.

Entry into draws close on Thursdays at 7:30pm AEST (8:30pm AEDT), at which time entry into the draw is stopped and no further tickets for the draw can be purchased. No tickets into the following draw can be purchased until the draw has been completed.

Draws then take place an hour later, at 8:30pm AEST (9:30pm AEDT). Live draws can be viewed in real time on Channel 7 and on 7two.

After a Thursday draw has occurred, tickets can be purchased shortly after for the next draw.

Powerball results will be shown on this website as promptly as possible after the draw, and then you can check Powerball tickets. Usually, results are available a short time after the draw has been finalised, approximately at 9pm AEST.

How Powerball Results are Drawn

For both versions of Powerball, the process of drawing Powerball results is very similar, however there are a few differences that set them apart.

In both lotteries, there are two transparent barrels full of lottery balls and each ball is marked with a unique number.

For US Powerball the first barrel contains balls numbered 1 to 69 and the second barrel contains the Powerballs, numbered from 1 to 26.

For Australian Powerball the first barrel contains balls numbered 1 to 35 and the second barrel contains the Powerballs, numbered from 1 to 20.

At the start of the draw process the balls are fed into the first barrel and are thoroughly shuffled inside. Once they have been mixed, the draw mechanism plucks a winning ball at random. This is repeated until all required winning main numbers have been selected.

For US Powerball 5 main numbers are drawn from the first barrel.

For Australian Powerball 7 main numbers are drawn from the first barrel.

The same draw process is then followed for the Powerball barrel. For both lotteries, only 1 Powerball is selected.

This process ensures fair and unpredictable Powerball results.

Before the US Powerball results main draw occurs, there is a draw that determines the Power Play multiplier. This is drawn by a random number generator and is not broadcast in live Powerball results broadcasts. There are two different scenarios in which the Power Play multiplier is drawn; one where the jackpot is the equivalent of USD$150 million or less and another where the jackpot is over USD$150 million.

When the jackpot is worth USD$150 million of less, the odds of each Power Play multiplier being drawn is as below:

When Jackpot is USD$150 Million or Less
Power Play MultiplierPrize*Odds
10xPrize multiplied by 101 in 43
5xPrize multiplied by 52 in 43
4xPrize multiplied by 43 in 43
3xPrize multiplied by 313 in 43
2xPrize multiplied by 224 in 43

When the jackpot is worth over USD$150 million the 10x multiplier is not available for selection. In this case the odds of each Power Play multiplier being drawn is as below:

When Jackpot is over USD$150 Million
Power Play MultiplierPrize*Odds
5xPrize multiplied by 52 in 42
4xPrize multiplied by 43 in 42
3xPrize multiplied by 313 in 42
2xPrize multiplied by 224 in 42
*Power Play does not apply to jackpot prizes. Division 2 prizes are always doubled with Power Play.

In Australia, the process of determining the Powerball results each draw is overseen by draw officials and a government supervisor.

In the US, the process of determining the US Powerball results each draw is overseen by an auditor and a Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) draw official.

Each draw is broadcast live over the internet to ensure transparency and to demonstrate that the draw process is fair and regulated and that winning numbers are selected at random.

How Do You Check Powerball Results?

When you play Powerball through us, after each draw not only do you receive an email with the results of each draw you entered, but all the hard work is done because you will be notified if you’ve won a prize or not, so you don’t have to check for yourself.

Despite this service, some players still like to manually review the Powerball results for themselves and check Powerball tickets to increase their confidence in knowing that the outcomes of the draw were correct. This is a commonly followed ritual for many lottery players.

There are probably a few different ways you could do this, but one method is explained in the following steps:

  • Check this page for the Powerball results
  • Gather together all the Powerball games you had entered in the draw
  • Inspect each of your games for the winning main numbers and the winning Powerball number
  • Mark any winning numbers that you found in any of your games
  • It’s worth rechecking to make sure you didn’t miss any winning numbers or didn’t accidentally mark the wrong ones as winning numbers.
For example, let’s say the Powerball results came back with the following winning numbers:
    11226445510
Let’s say you purchased one US Powerball game with the following numbers:
    11226344810
Here you can see that your game matched 3 main winning numbers and the Powerball number.

To see which prize this equates to, you need to find the division that requires 3 main numbers to be matched, along with the Powerball:

DivisionUS Powerball
1 (Jackpot)
+
2
3
+
4
5
+
6
7
+
8
+
9

As you can see above, division 5 would have been won in this example.

This is a straight-forward check that anyone can do but remember that it’s not absolutely necessary. Playing through us means you will be emailed your Powerball results and you will be notified if you’ve won a prize.

What Happens if the Powerball Results Show That I’ve Won?

For players who are lucky enough to have the results go in their favour, the next steps depend on a few things:

  • Which website you bought the online ticket from and what their business model is
  • Which prize you won

If you won a minor prize, for example, divisions 4 and under, the prize will often quickly be paid to your online lottery account.

If you won a major prize, it’s likely the website you purchased the ticket from will contact you to talk you through the next steps.

If you bought the ticket online in Australia through a government-licensed, Australian-owned and operated website that sells its own matched lottery tickets, after confirming your identity and payment details, they’ll organise payment of the prize, less any relevant US taxes.

If you bought the ticket from an unlicensed or foreign-owned website or even a licensed one just reselling US lottery tickets, it’s likely that if you win the jackpot prize, you’ll be required to travel to the USA yourself to collect it, from the state in which the ticket was purchased on your behalf. This is one reason why we don’t advocate for these types of online lottery sites.

For US Powerball players that win the jackpot prize, there are two options that need to be considered for the payout. The first option is the lump sum payment. For this option the entire jackpot prize is paid out all in one big payment, less applicable US taxes.

The second option is the annuity. This is 1 immediate payment and then 29 subsequent annual payments, with each being 5% larger than the previous year’s payment.

Record Powerball Winners

Powerball results have been favourable for many lucky players from both versions of Powerball.

In November 2022 one amazingly fortunate player in the US decided to check his Powerball ticket only to find he’d won an astounding $2.95 billion! This is the highest lottery prize ever won. 30-year-old Edwin Castro has since purchased himself two luxury homes and in a very astute move, has also hired a personal security detail. As the ticket was sold in the US state of California, he was required to publicly reveal his identity as a condition of claiming the prize. California is one of several states that mandate this. This is enforced for a few reasons:

Transparency: The main reason is to ensure transparency and public trust in the lottery system. By publicly identifying winners, the lottery organization shows that the prizes are indeed being awarded to real people. This helps to mitigate any concerns or suspicions about corruption or fraud within the lottery system.

Promotion: Publicizing the winners can also serve as a promotional tool. The stories of lottery winners can be compelling and may inspire other people to buy tickets, increasing sales and, in turn, the amount of money that is given to support the community.

In most cases winners who play US Powerball online through a government-licensed and Australian owned/operated site aren’t required to reveal their identity in order to receive jackpot prizes.

One short month before the huge win in California, Australia’s highest lotto jackpot was identified when the Powerball results went live. The jackpot totalled $160 million but it was shared amongst 3 winners for a cut of just over $53 million each. There was one winner each from Victoria, Western Australia and New South Wales. One win was not from a registered player, and as a result there was no way to know who the winner was, or how to find them to tell them the good news. He eventually came forward with the winning ticket to claim his share of Australia’s biggest prize!
